To create the show, Roustabout ran two engagement programmes with children and young people in the South West. The programme championed their wonderfully inventive ideas and provided a platform for their creativity to be celebrated by peers and parents.
The first, held in August 2023 in partnership with Super Culture and Into University, involved a Summer School with children and young people aged 7 – 12 years from Weston Super Mare. Over just five days, young people created and designed their very own show about digestion which they performed for their caregivers at the end of the week.
The second, held in September and October 2023, involved a 6 week research and development programme run in two Bristol primary schools (St Werburghs and Cabot Circus). Students participated in creative development workshops every Thursday in which they created three further shows about digestion which they performed for their caregivers, teachers and fellow school students. Inspired by the many brilliant ideas from these children and young people, the Roustabout team then commenced a two week R&D to create the show.
Students at St Werburghs and Cabot Circus (writing approximately 9.2 million ideas*)
